Teen Addiction Questions: Am I to Blame for Their Addiction?

Mother talking to son in teen addiction programTeen addiction is a heart-wrenching experience for any parent to have to go through. When you find out your teen has a substance abuse problem, the first thing many parents think is “what did I do wrong?” It’s important to not take on this burden. This simple fact is, teen addiction isn’t anybody’s fault. Let’s talk about why that is.

Addiction is a Disease

It’s important to remember that addiction is a disease, and there’s nothing you can do to prevent a disease. There weren’t any actions or things you’ve said that caused your teen to become an addict. Ask yourself if you would blame yourself if your teen had any other chronic illness. You wouldn’t, so there’s no sense in blaming yourself for teen addiction either.

Ok, It’s Not My Fault, so Who’s Fault Is It?

Well, if it isn’t your fault, it has to be someone’s, right? Again, the answer is no. It’s not your fault, it’s not the fault of their friends, and it’s not their fault either. Some people can try drugs and alcohol and never be addicted to them. An addict will latch on to their drug or drugs of choice and won’t be let go of them until they seek help.

What Can I Do Now?

As heartbreaking as it is to hear, the only thing you can do is be there for them. Teen addiction is a battle that they’ll have to fight on their own, through the power of rehabilitation. Even if you throw out all of their drugs and alcohol, they may just seek out more. You won’t be able to control their addiction. What you can do is help them realize that they have a problem and that they have a support system who is there for them to help them through the rehabilitation process. Once an addict realizes they have a problem and they’re ready to get help, then they can begin the process of healing.
