#1. Relax Relaxing can be difficult when you are experiencing withdrawals, but it’s important to find a way to take your mind off the negative feelings you are experiencing. One of the best methods for relaxing during withdrawals is to follow the Four D’s: Delay acting, Deep breathing, Drink water, and Do something else. These methods allow you to calm your nerves and distract yourself from irritation and cravings. Outside of the Four D’s, other relaxation methods include yoga, meditation, or picking up a new hobby. Everyone has a different relaxation method. The most important thing is that you find something that works for you.
#2. Exercise Exercise is one of the most effective ways to take your mind off withdrawals. Physical activity is known to release endorphins, which are pleasure chemicals in the brain that naturally combat pain and other negative feelings. During your teen addiction program, find an exercising method that combats your stress. Whether it be long distance running or going for a simple stroll around the block, a little movement will help take your mind off your withdrawal symptoms.
#3. Talk it Out Teen addiction is not something you can go through on your own. Everyone needs someone supportive to talk to when the experience gets difficult. If you are experiencing any withdrawal symptoms — from physical pain to mental cravings — be sure to talk to someone you trust, such as a friend, a teacher, or a mentor.
#4. Celebrate in a Healthy Way The road to recovery is long and hard, so take a pit stop every now and then to celebrate your accomplishments. Beating withdrawals is a huge part of the process, so find a healthy, constructive way to celebrate this milestone. Whether it be going out to eat at your favorite restaurant or buying yourself something you’ve been wanting for a while, treating yourself every now and then can help you stay motivated to keep up the hard work.
